A Jamaican singer, songwriter, lyricist, supermodel, record producer, and actress. at 18 and signed on as a model with Wilhelmina Modelling agency. She moved to Paris in 1970. The Parisian fashion scene was receptive to Jones' unusual, androgynous, bold, dark-skinned appearance. Jones' distinctive androgynous appearance, square-cut, angular padded clothing, manner, and height 5'10 1/2 influenced the cross-dressing movement of the 1980s.

Eulogized as the first female self-made millionaire in America, she became one of the wealthiest African American women in the country, "the world's most successful female entrepreneur of her time," and one of the most successful African-American business owners ever.

An American model, businesswoman and author, She was the first African-American model to appear on the cover of Ladies' Home Journal, and is widely credited as being the first African-American supermodel. Although born in Oxford, MS, Naomi grew up in the city of Pittsburgh, PA. The New York Times wrote that (her) "appearance as the first black model on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in November 1968 was a consummate moment of the Black is Beautiful movement"

I decided to kick off this month by taking a look at some of the stylish woman who came before us. These were entrepreneurs, supermodels, tastemakers, advocates, mothers, voters, wives, daughters, and game changes. They wore many hats and created inroads for others to follow.
