Pineapple

Pineapples are the universal symbol for welcome and hospitality so of course they are perfect for bringing to a party. Once you hand that bad boy off, be sure and give your host an idea of when it should be ripe. It could also be fun to pick up the pre-cut version at Whole Foods, but there’s nothing like the fresh thing. Photo: bruno innascimento

Olive Oil

You can cook with it, moisturize your skin and hair, polish furniture and more. Which is what makes olive oil a fantastic gift for your host. If they aren’t big on consuming this essential oil it has so many other great uses. Note Cards

Might be cheesy, but creative artisanal note cards are a fun way to share a trip you’ve recently taken or give your host something nostalgic. You can do this by sharing just one that’s blank inside or a cute box. Extra points if you leave a thank you message in the first one. Note Card: Annie Spratt

Who doesn’t love dessert? Whether it’s a bowl of fruit or a pie you made with your bare hands it will always be welcome to the party. This is a great time to share one of your favorites that you’ve been dying to get other people’s opinions on. Chocolates

Bringing chocolates are always fun, especially if you know your host love them. They can do double duty at the party as dessert for the guest, or serve as a decadent treat for your host after everyone has gone home. Be mindful that you get a mix that doesn’t have nuts unless you know our host doesn’t have an allergy. But avoid those weird fruity ones, less they get left in the box for months. Photo: Yoori Koo

Tea Towls

Make your host’s day. You know what I’m talking about here. Those cutesy towels you see on blog post foodie pictures. Like the one sitting under the kettle over there. Tea towels are a timeless kitchen essential and they often need to be replaced frequently depending on the type of use. They can be used to dry dishes, wring the liquid out of veggies, or dry your hands. You can find them at the TJ Maxx, Ross, or Marshalls. But there are kitchen stores like Sur la Table, William Sonoma and other that have them as well. Photo: Dayne Topkin

Pet Treats

Give a little love to your hosts pets, after all they have to make concessions for you visit whether it’s staying out of the dining room, being locked away in a room, or listening to your cheesy conversations. It doesn’t have to be complicated, a simple biscuit for dogs or feathery gadget for a cat will do. It’s almost like bring flowers for the mother of your date.

First off, don’t go empty-handed. Your host has slaved away in the kitchen (or paid someone to) and we want to show full appreciation for the bounty we are about to receive. But the reality is, we don’t know your life! So we probably shouldn’t assume that you drink, love scents, have allergies, or might have asthma. Which is why it might be time to switch up the gift to host game with a few new ideas. So here’s what to bring…

As a hostess with the mostest I love giving a party as much as attending. What I’ve learned over the years is that party hosts have lots of unique proclivities, like not everyone can take synthetic fragrances and some people don’t drink. They can have allergies we want to be sensitive too. It’s about time we should consider some new ways to delight our hosts after they have graciously slaved away in the kitchen. So here’s what to bring…

Disclaimer: We will still run into hosts that don’t like these things, but they will definitely say you came with something unique and it will more than likely get you another invite to the party.
