How To Repurpose An Old Prom Dress

By Maia Williams

If you have an old prom dress you think you’ll never wear again…think again! You can repurpose the look the stylish way with clothes that you may already have in your closet. Check out how I restyled my lavish prom gown.

The dress I wore for prom 2015, is a two piece set. The top is a silver sequence bustier and the bottom is a sleek red mermaid style skirt. Mermaid silhouettes are great for accenting curves even where there may not be a lot, as well as enhancing the curves you already have.

See how I accented my sleek red mermaid skirt with a black lace bralette top. If you want to find a little black bag, I suggest you head off to your local vintage store or thrift shop.  I have a small frame, so I was careful not to have a purse that overpowered me. IMG_3140

The skirt alone can also be worn as a dress if you pull it up to your bust. You can cut the bottom off the red skirt (see gallery photo) and turn it into a sleek pencil skirt; which would be a great way to dress it down.

I styled the bustier with a pair of denim blue jeans and a pair of black high heels. The bustier can also be styled with a pair of high waist shorts or jeans. Also, you can wear a satin pencil skirt for a girl’s night out look.

If you too, have repurposed your prom dress, your evening wear or any other dress-up ensemble, please send us a photo for us to post at ola@yourstylishways.com
